The Waubonsee Community College Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on Wednesday, Mar. 19, 2025, covering a range of topics including student recognition, financial updates and campus improvements.
The meeting opened with the introduction of Waubonsee student Jonathan Chavarria Perez, who shared his personal journey. Perez spoke about his experiences at the college, highlighting the opportunities and support systems that have contributed to his academic success.
“Waubonsee has given me so much, and I am grateful for the support from my professors and the community here,” Perez said.
Following student recognition, the board heard a sabbatical leave report from Assistant Professor of Philosophy Keith Bickley on the value of a liberal arts education in a destabilized society. Subsequently, the college’s information technology department was honored for its contributions. Waubonsee Community College President Dr. Brian Knetl, emphasized the department’s role in maintaining campus operations.
“I wanted to focus on and recognize all the great work that our IT department does,” Knetl said. “A lot of the work they do is behind the scenes, it goes unrecognized, but without their dedication, without their work, this college would not be able to run and operate.”
Interim Vice President of Finance and Administration John Bryant provided a financial report, outlining key budget updates and expenditures. Bryant discussed ongoing efforts to ensure fiscal responsibility and maintain student services despite financial challenges.
“We are carefully balancing necessary expenses while continuing to prioritize student resources,” Bryant said.
The Waubonsee Foundation’s quarterly board meeting report was presented by Board Member Stacy Ries, detailing recent fundraising efforts and scholarship opportunities for students.
“The foundation continues to seek new ways to expand financial aid options for our students because we know how critical scholarships can be in their academic journeys,” Ries said.
Additionally, Board Member Tina Willson provided updates on statewide initiatives impacting community colleges as a part of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association meetings report.
“We are working on policy changes that will positively impact community college students across the state, particularly in terms of financial aid and transfer opportunities,” Willson said.
During the Faculty Council update, Waubonsee Community College Faculty Council President Patty Saccone addressed current faculty initiatives and concerns, while President Dr. Brian Knetl delivered the President’s Report, summarizing recent college developments and upcoming events.
“Our focus remains on student success and ensuring that our faculty and staff have the resources they need to continue providing a top-tier education,” Knetl said.
Public comment featured one speaker, Michael Kremski from the United States Patriot Society, who spoke about how Biblical values and principles form the basis of the American Republic.
“Our citizens should understand early that the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament or the Christian religion,” Kremski said.
The board then moved into an executive session before reconvening to approve the consent agenda. Key approvals included the meeting minutes from the Feb. 19, 2025 board meeting; personnel reports, including retirements, resignations and new full-time appointments; financial reports, including payroll and accounts payable; and several campus improvement projects, such as the replacement of Aurora Fox Valley Campus windows and LED lighting upgrades.
Additionally, the board approved a bid for the Dickson Center Community Board Room renovation project and the renewal of key service agreements, including mechanical preventive maintenance and security camera management.
A policy committee update was provided, along with discussions on curriculum developments and ongoing construction projects.
“We continue to look for ways to enhance our curriculum to meet the needs of both students and the workforce,” Knetl said.
Before adjourning, the board recognized the student trustee Ashley Hatcher for 2024-25 and discussed the impact of federal policies on higher education and Waubonsee’s future planning.
“It is crucial that we stay informed about these policy changes so we can advocate for our students and ensure they have the best opportunities available,” Willson said.
The next Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Apr. 16, 2025 at 6:00pm.
